Indepedent Contractors
Hello, I'm Dave Lauriski, head of MSHA.

Use of independent contractors by mine operators has more than doubled in the last 20 twenty years.

Unfortunately, nearly 200 of these independent contractors were killed in mining accidents during the last decade.

If you have to go to work at a mining site, follow these guidelines to protect yourself:

First, you should have a talk about hazards at the mine site with the mine operator prior to beginning your work. Open communication about potential hazards is key to preventing accidents.

Second, be aware of your surroundings in your immediate work area. And follow all posted safety guidelines while on mine property.

Third, mine operators should ensure that all contractors are properly trained for the work they're hired to perform.

Thank you for listening. And remember…safety is a value.
