MSHA helps mark five-year anniversary of Quecreek Mine rescue
Nine miners saved after nearly four days trapped underground


PHILADELPHIA - Federal officials from the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) will take part in a celebration marking the five-year anniversary of the Quecreek Mine rescue, in which nine coal miners working underground became trapped for 77 hours when they accidentally broke into an adjacent abandoned mine that unleashed millions of gallons of water.

The event will take place on Saturday, July 28, in Somerset, Pa. MSHA's Kevin Stricklin, who helped lead federal rescue efforts, and Jeffrey Kravitz, who coordinated delivery of the rescue capsule that carried the nine men safely to the surface, will deliver brief remarks. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker will give the keynote address.
