Small Mines
Statistics show that mining operations that employ 5 or fewer miners tend to experience many more accidents that cause injury than larger mines. For that reason, we at MSHA recently created a new Small Mine Safety and Health Office. This new office will help operators of smaller mining sites enhance their safety and health efforts. There are approximately 6,500 mining operations nationwide that meet our definition of a small mine. And we want them all to know that MSHA stands ready to help them improve their safety and health programs. MSHA's Small Mines Office will: Work directly with small mine operators to tailor a safety program specifically for their mining operation. Provide on-site compliance assistance with MSHA requirements. Develop an on-going working relationship with the operator and make contacts on a regular basis. We want to become a partner in safety and health at these operations. Call your local MSHA office for more information about the Small Mines Office and how it can help you.
