"Mine Safety Minutes" Text Transcripts
Supervisor Safety
This message is for all supervisors or mine foremen at mining operations. In a recent six month period, twelve fatal accidents occurred at metal and nonmetal mining operations. Incredibly, seven of these victims were supervisors, like you. The majority of these accidents occurred while maintenance work was being performed. Supervisors at all mining operations should always take a few minutes to think carefully about any task they are about to perform before you begin to work. Supervisors should focus on the potential hazards associated with doing each task. Supervisors should also talk with their crew about safely doing the job they are about to perform. Have your crew discuss any hazards that might be encountered while performing their task. You all should identify the procedures that need to be used to get the job done safely. Think and talk about the use of proper tools and equipment needed for a job. Think and talk about locations of other personnel when performing certain tasks so that they aren't exposed to any hazard. And be sure that everyone, including supervisors, are trained in safe work procedures. Thank you for listening and remember, safety is a value. |
