#22 - Alcohol/Drug Abuse
The Mine Safety and Health Administration is very concerned about the use and abuse of alcohol by miners and mine operators while on the job. Miners everywhere should understand that alcohol or drugs-- and mining do not mix.

Hello, this is Bob Friend with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

The typical mining environment is a complex place. Whether a surface or an underground mine, the duties involved require sharp thinking, quick reaction, and laser-like focus on the task at hand.

During this holiday season, you might be tempted to over-indulge in alcoholic beverages while celebrating. Please remember your actions could endanger others.

Use of alcohol or drugs can slow down the mental processes needed for you to work efficiently and to react quickly in case of an emergency. Quick recognition of potential hazards is key to staying safe.

Don't let the use of alcohol or drugs on the job bring tragedy to you and your loved ones. Help us to send each and every miner home safely at the end of each shift, especially during this holiday season.

    Thank you for listening.
