The Executive Branch

Article II of the Constitution defines the power of the President, who heads the executive branch of the government. Other members of the executive branch include the Vice President, Executive Office of the President, and 14 executive agencies known as "Departments". Each Department is headed by a "Secretary" (or in the case of the Department of Justice, it is the Attorney General) who is appointed by the President and confirmed by a two-thirds vote of the Senate. Each of the Secretaries and the Attorney General is a member of the President's "Cabinet". The Cabinet members advise the President on any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices in accordance with Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution. Other independent agency heads may also be given cabinet-member status at the discretion of the President. If you would like to learn more about the departments that make up the executive branch, click on the cabinet. You may also pay a visit to the White House web site.
