in West Frankfort, Illinois

On January 22, 2009, MSHA Field Office Supervisor Mike Rennie and Charlie Dame with MSHA’s Education and Field Services visited the St. John's Parochial school in West Frankfort, Illinois, and presented a Stay Out—Stay Alive program to students and teachers. Mike discussed the importance of staying clear of abandoned mines and quarries, as well as the dangers of riding ATVs on mine properties. Students also learned about some of the safety gear that MSHA mine inspectors use to stay safe on the job.
