On May 3, 2013, Debbie Tomko and Roger Rude from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Technical Support, Dust Division visited Gastonville Elementary Center (Ringgold School District) located in Finleyville, Pennsylvania to speak about mine safety through the “Stay Out – Stay Alive” program. The visit was composed of three different sessions (2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders) for a total of approximately 75 students. They spoke to the students on the many dangers that various types of mines present and their experiences when entering mine facilities. They also showed the students the protective gear that is used at the mine and talked about the training received to perform their jobs in a safe manner. As usual, the students had many questions about experiences in the mine. Stickers, literature, coloring books, and crayons were provided by MSHA to distribute to the students after completion of the program.
