03/22/2009
A 6-year-old boy riding on an all-terrain vehicle with his grandfather suffered head injuries when the machine flipped in Tooele Saturday evening, police said.

The two were riding in a gravel pit on the west side of the city just before 6 p.m. when the man tried to drive up a steep embankment, said Tooele Police Sgt. Steve Gowans. The ATV flipped backward and the child was thrown as the machine rolled to the bottom of the hill. He was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday morning. The grandfather had minor injuries but refused treatment, Gowans said. Neither was wearing a helmet.
