Jeep Flips and Rolls Into Mine Shaft
A man freed from a Jeep that flipped and rolled into a mine shaft is out of the hospital.
His sister told reporters the man's only injuries are marks from the seatbelt straps holding him in as he hung over the mine.
Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef says the man flipped his Jeep at about 3 p.m.
He said the jeep caught the edge of the mine and flipped over as the driver and two friends were off-hyphenroading in the area east of Lake Pleasant Road.
The two friends climbed out and called 911.
The driver was left hanging over the mine for two and a half hours as rescue workers attempted to free him.
It took more than 40 workers from several Valley police and fire departments and 12 pieces of equipment to secure the vehicle and rescue the driver, according to Tellef.
He said workers had to take special precautions in case the mine shaft collapsed.
The man was not supposed to drive in that area.
It has been closed to drivers for about one year and a half, Tellef said.
The man could face criminal trespassing charges.
