A 16-year-old girl underwent surgery for head injuries suffered during a fall in a rock quarry in a remote part of Banning, Calif. The Banning High School student lost her footing and fell about 40 to 50 feet down a rocky, gradual slope, rescuers said. The accident happened in an area of northeast Banning where companies operate rock quarries near a stream and mountains. Two friends were hiking with her when she fell. Quarry workers said the spot where the girl fell is called "the old pit" and is no longer mined. But water is sometimes drawn out of the bottom which trucks then spread to keep dust down.
