"Near Miss" Incident Information File

09/01/2004
A young woman was taken to Albany Medical Center with head and spinal injuries after falling 50 feet from an embankment in Greene County, N.Y. Police and rescue crews responded to the rock quarry at Old State Road off Route 9W in New Baltimore. When they arrived, they found a teenage girl who had fallen from the embankment. Officials said the area is posted with "Keep Out" signs, but trespassers may have saved her life. First Assistant Fire Chief Scott VanWormer of the New Baltimore Fire Dept. said, "Luckily, some kids happened to be walking by and saw something red in the woods, went over to look what it was and it was her laying wedged between two rocks. I guess this is one chance where trespassing turned out to be a good thing." The woman was coherent when rescue crews arrived. (Source: Capital News 9, Albany)
