04/10/2005
An Iowa teenager was hurt after jumping over a guardrail to avoid police and falling 60 feet into a rock quarry near Grand Meadow, Minn. Authorities said the 17-year-old boy from Chester, Iowa, was trying to avoid a citation for consuming alcohol while underage. The Mower County sheriff said the teen was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He was expected to recover from a head injury and a broken wrist and leg. According to officials, shortly after midnight, a deputy found a vehicle parked with no lights on. When the deputy approached, the teen got out and jumped over the rail. He apparently landed on rocks and sand in the Osmundson Quarry northeast of Grand Meadow, about 22 miles from Rochester in southeast Minnesota. Grand Meadow firefighters reached the boy by using an ATV. There other teenagers in the car face charges related to drinking. (Source: Associated Press)
