04/29/2006
A 27-year old man riding an off-road vehicle fell down an abandoned mine shaft on Bureau of Land Management lands near Lake Elsinore, Calif. The man had been riding his four-wheel “quad” off-highway vehicle on public lands when he drove into a mine shaft and fell about 40 feet. A second man, who had been riding a motorcycle with the victim, witnessed the accident and called local emergency services. Fire and medical personnel responded taking nearly seven hours to extract the man. The driver was airlifted to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley and was treated for a broken right arm, leg injury, cuts and bruises and possible internal injuries.
