West Virginia State Police say carbon dioxide from a fire led rescue crews to two men who were lost in a closed underground coal mine. Rescuers found 44-year-old Franklin Johnson and 35-year-old Glen Edelman two days after they went missing. The men went into the mine in Mammoth, W.Va., on Saturday to hunt for scrap metal to sell. The mine has been closed since 1993. It is owned by Massey Energy, based in Richmond.
State Police Trooper First Class R-H Green says Johnson and Edelman were treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital. Green says both men will face charges but he can't say what those charges will be until police talk to prosecutors. Massey lawyer Shane Harvey says the company hopes the men will be charged with trespassing. Harvey says breaking into a coal mine is dangerous, and it isn't worth the risk. (Source: Associated Press)
