A man trying to rescue his son drowned June 3 in Wisconsin’s Lake Wazee, a water-filled former mine promoted as a scuba attraction, the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said. Scott Zobeck, 37, of Alma Center, went near deep water at the lake, near Black River Falls, to retrieve his son. Zobeck pulled the boy out but fell into the lake. He was under water about 10 minutes until snorkelers found his body. Lake Wazee, formed when water filled the former Jackson County Iron Mine quarry, is described as the state's deepest inland body of water, with a maximum depth of 355 feet.
