Fatal Accident Summaries

A day of dirt biking in Marshfield, Mass., came to a fatal end for a 33-year-old Quincy man. Eric Meritt, a native of Scituate, was found dead June 19 in a gravel pit off Waltham Avenue in the Silver Pines section of town. After investigating the accident scene, police determined that Merritt, who was riding alone, had apparently ridden downhill, hit a rock and tumbled over the bike. Authorities said that Merritt, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, had sustained injuries to his head, ribs and legs but still managed to get up and try to walk initially after the crash. According to Marshfield Police Det. Lt. Robert Wright, "He got up and walked about 60 or 70 feet and then collapsed.” Wright also said that Merritt was had probably been dead 16 to 20 hours prior to being discovered by authorities.
