A 24-year-old Tecumseh man drowned in a gravel pit where he was apparently swimming with friends without permission on Memorial Day afternoon, authorities said.

The victim was pronounced dead at about 6:30 p.m. at Herrick Memorial Health Center, Tecumseh.

Rescue workers were called to the gravel pit just south of Tecumseh in Raisin Township about 5:45 p.m., according to the Lenawee County Sheriff's office.

Emergency crews dashed through private yards with boats to reach the pit, which has not been used for gravel mining for decades and is nearly surrounded by fences and locked gates, Lenawee Sheriff's Cpl. Conway R. Linger said.

The victimLester had been swimming for about an hour with 10 to 15 people, some of whom left before authorities arrived, he said.

There have been other drownings over the years in the gravel pit, which is off-limits to swimmers, Corporal Linger said.
