Man Drowns in Gravel Pit

A 34-year-old Detroit man drowned in a small body of water close to the Huron River in Washtenaw County, the county Sheriff’s Office reported.

The victim was canoeing with friends along the river Wednesday and had stopped about 5 p.m. at the gravel pit to swim, deputies said. Witnesses told police that he disappeared below the water’s surface and began to struggle as he tried to make it back to shore.

Friends of the victim tried to reach him but couldn’t, police said.

Divers from the Washtenaw County Dive Team located the victim and tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
