Man feared drowned in South Knoxville quarry
Rescue workers searched into the night Sunday for a man who went swimming in a South Knoxville quarry and didn't resurface.
Divers from the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad and Knoxville Fire Department personnel began looking for a 22-year-old man in the quarry at Fort Dickerson Park shortly after 7:30 p.m., KFD Capt. Darrell Whitaker said.
"Once he went into the water, the people with him lost sight of him," Whitaker said.
As dusk began to fall, one slightly built young man emerged from the woods surrounding the quarry, sat down and buried his face in his hands.
A short time later, a man in street clothes arrived, arms outstretched calling, "Where is he, y'all?" The man embraced the slender man, then collapsed and began crying.
Meanwhile, rescue workers loaded an all-terrain vehicle with lighting gear and generators in preparation for searching the waters of the quarry with camera equipment.
Chris Foust, who lives across Blount Avenue from the park, said such incidents are commonplace even though the area is marked with "no trespassing" signs.
"There are two or three of these every year," he said.
