A Bloomington man’s body was found Thursday night after divers were called to a Lawrence County quarry to look for a swimmer who didn’t resurface.

The victim, a 22 year-old man, died after jumping into the Indiana Limestone Quarry near Oolitic.

Indiana Conservation Public Information Officer Mac Spainhour said the victim jumped from an 80-foot ledge into the water below about 7:30 p.m. According to interviews with witnesses, he struck the water with his abdomen and didn’t resurface.

A man and woman were with the victim at the quarry. Spainhour said the man jumped into the water and swam around looking for him. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene as well as divers from Indiana Conservation.

Spainhour said the victims’ body was found in 23 feet of water.
