A 26-year-old man drowned while swimming with friends in a water-filled gravel pit in the town of Burke, Wisc. The victim and five friends were swimming in the Nelson gravel pit, which is on private property and posted for no trespassing, the Dane County Sheriff's Department said. When the man began having trouble, his friends tried unsuccessfully to rescue him and then called for emergency help. Divers recovered the body later.
