04/20/2001 A 17-year-old boy drowned at a Wilkinson County, Ga., kaolin mine while swimming with friends in one of its many water-filled clay holes. His body was found 25 feet from an embankment. The mines are off limits to the public, but people often sneak into the canyon-like area to play and swim in the holes, which range in depth from just a few feet to 50 feet. The gates and fences intended to keep people out of the mines are repeatedly knocked down and broken. |
