A 16-year-old from DuQuoin, Ill., drowned in a Jackson County strip mine pit. The teenager and two friends tried to swim across the pit, known as "The Crane," according to the Jackson County sheriff's department. He could not make it across, and his two swimming companions and a third person were unable to rescue him. The Jackson County chapter of the Rend Lake Dive team and Illinois Department of Natural Resources workers found the victim's body in about 40 feet of water.
