06/23/2002 Two brothers exploring a flooded, abandoned mine about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles tried to swim deeper into the shaft, but died in the murky, gas-clogged water. Along with a third young man, the two victims had been hiking along a trail in the Cleveland National Forest when they spotted the mine. They found their way blocked by water about 100 feet inside the shaft, but dove into the water in the hopes they could swim past the flooded portion. Their bodies were retrieved by special cave divers who work for the sheriff's departments in Orange and Los Angeles counties . (Source: Los Angeles Times) |
