A summer swim in a water-filled sandpit turned deadly for a 43-year-old Hammonton, N.J., man hoping to swim from end to end. The pond measures about 300 yards by 600 yards, and by the time he was two-thirds of the way across, he slipped beneath the water. A friend swimming alongside him attempted a rescue, but was unsuccessful.
