08/04/2002 A Haines, Alaska man drowned while swimming with a friend in a gravel pit, according to Alaska State Troopers. The 20-year-old man died while swimming with a friend in gravel pit ponds near the Haines Highway, troopers said. The friend contacted authorities after he returned from a swim and could not find the victim. He was later discovered by a Fish and Wildlife Protection officer and rescue workers.
