A 12-year-old boy drowned while playing with friends in an abandoned Courtland, N.Y., quarry where swimming is illegal. Divers recovered the body of the Peekskill youth about three hours after he went underwater. Two of the boy's friends went to the nearest home for help and two others stayed but could not save the boy, police said. Illegal swimming at the quarry has long been a problem. Logs and other obstructions block roads leading there, and the dark water of the quarry runs among dangerous jagged rocks. (Source: Associated Press)
