Although none of them knew how to swim, they began wading in an area with a sand bar about 3 feet deep. The 9-year-old victim stepped off the sand bar into an area 35 feet deep and subsequently drowned. There was no fence around the property, but the trail leading to the pond was flanked by signs warnnig people to keep out.
