06-05-2004 An Evansville, Ind., teenager and recent high school graduate drowned while swimming in a reclaimed strip pit near Oakland City. The unreclaimed coal mine has been abandoned for several years and is a popular swimming hole, according to local officials. The victim, along with a few friends, jumped off a cliff and, according to witnesses, began struggling before getting half way across. Two of the witnesses tried to help, but got pulled under by the panicked victim. He was found in 15 feet of water by rescue divers. (Source: WFIE-TV, Evansville) |
