The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Center for Environmental Training (MCET) of the College of Southern Maryland are partners in providing comprehensive miner training in Maryland. This training program is designed to reduce injuries in the metal and nonmetal and coal mining industries by targeting specific causes of accidents and injuries. Such training, delivered on an annual basis, helps miners and contractors working at Maryland mining operations better understand the root causes of accidents such as incorrect handling of materials, improper use of hand-tools, powered haulage equipment, mishandling of machinery, and falls due to slips and trips. The training program also focuses on the prevention of such accidents and injuries by helping miners and contractors become more aware of the safety and occupational health hazards found in mining environments.
