Week of April 4, 1999 through week of May 2, 1999

Several attempts were necessary to successfully sink Borehole #5, located in the No. 14 crosscut in the longwall's 18N tailgate. On the first attempt the borehole intersected solid coal rather than a open mine entry. A drill steel became stuck in the second attempted Borehole #5, approximately 11 feet from the coal seam, rendering the hole useless. The third attempt intersected a mine opening, but after a downhole probe was conducted, the water level was found to be 21 feet above the coal seam
