As of February 20, 2000

Officials of the Mountain Coal Company's West Elk Mine, located near Somerset, Colorado, are still continuing to identify the area of the thermal event. Several more boreholes (Holes G, K, and P) have been drilled into the B West Mains. Also, a borehole (Hole I) has been drilled into an adjacent sealed area to the north off of the B West Mains that was previously longwall mined. The air analysis from Hole I suggest the gases from the thermal event could be entering the B West Mains from the sealed area.
