As of February 26, 2000

Officials of the Mountain Coal Company's West Elk Mine, located near Somerset, Colorado, are still continuing to identify the area of the thermal event. Additional boreholes (Holes L and I) have been drilled into the B West Mains and 5th NW Headgate. A remote camera was dropped into these two holes to assess conditions underground. The bottom of Hole L was found to be caved with only rubble visible. The view in Hole I showed smoke traveling within the entry with somewhat reduced visibility
