District 5 - Coal Mine Safety and Health
A Serious Non-fatal Surface Accident
On Saturday, February 12, 2005, at about 2:00 p. m. a loader operator sustained a broken shoulder blade, five broken ribs, fractured lumbar and a lacerated liver. The victim unloaded palettes onto the trash pile located at the foot of a highwall. The victim knelt at the pile to set it on fire. Apparently rock or ice fell off the highwall striking him along his right side. Chunks of ice and rock were seen at the accident site.
- Evaluate highwall conditions closely during seasonal changes.
- Everyone should be observant of highwall conditions at all times.
- Minimize the hazard by staging materials and work areas away from the highwall.
