District 5 - Coal Mine Safety and Health
A Near Miss
On June 4, 2001, an unintentional roof fall occurred during retreat mining. One cut had been mined from the end of the No. 6 Coal Pillar on the 001-0 Section. The roof fell at an undetected slip while employees were installing breaker timbers. The fall covered two mobile roof supports. A scoop was entrapped with the operator positioned safely beneath the canopy, receiving no injuries. Another miner located beside the scoop was entrapped from the waist down. The miner was extracted, transported to the hospital and treated for bruises and facial lacerations and released.
- Thoroughly examine roof/rib conditions wherever you work or travel, especially during retreat mining where the roof tends to become unstable.
