A Serious Non-fatal Accident
On Tuesday, January 22, 2002, a contract driver was seriously injured in a truck accident. The accident occurred on a mine roadway located in Clinchco, VA. The tractor-trailer, loaded with approximately 35 tons of coal, was traveling down an elevated roadway on the left side where snow and ice was present. The vehicle lost traction, causing the trailer to slide quickly to the left. As the driver was attempting to exit the truck, he was thrown from the cab, and the trailer ran over his left leg, severing it below the knee. The tractor-trailer came to a stop in the roadway in a jack - knife position.
- Be more aware of mine road conditions during adverse weather.
- Be cautious when traveling roadways after overnight freezing.
- Always use seatbelts and, stay in the vehicle. It's safer.
