The S&S Rate Calculator is a tool for mine operators that implement a Corrective Action Program (CAP) with goals for reductions in a mines rate of Significant and Substantial (S&S) violations to determine if a mine is meeting its goals. Unlike the POV Monitoring Tool, which allows mine operators, miners and other stakeholders to measure a mines performance against MSHAs specific screening criteria for a Pattern of Violations, the S&S Rate Calculator allows users to calculate a mines S&S rate for any specific date range. To use the tool, users will need the mines Mine ID number.

Enter a Mine ID:
If you do not know the Mine ID, you can find it through the Mine Data Retrieval System.

Enter a Date Range:
By default, the tool will search the most recent period for which data is available - the last quarter for underground mines and the last two quarters for surface mines and facilities. You can also input other date ranges. Data is available from January 1, 2010 up to 14 days prior to today's date. Only the current operator's history will be retrieved.

Check Results:
The results page shows the number of S&S citations or orders issued and the number of inspection hours at that mine during the time frame. It also compares the mine's citation and order rate with the national average for that mine type in the most recent one-year period.
