Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - Illinois
The State of Illinois received a grant of $52,000. They used these funds to secure mine maps from public and private sources in order to enhance the existing state Archive Mine Map Collection. As a direct result of the MSHA seed money, they were able to add nearly 2,000 unique mine maps to their collection. They are now using AML funding to digitize, geo-reference, and archive the collected maps. Their primary emphasis has been on creating scanned images (digitizing) to a quality that is the visual equivalent of the original hard copy mine map for future use and archival purposes. They have scanned 6,550 mine maps which are stored as TIFF images on a tape backup (archival storage). They recognize the importance of geo-referencing mine maps but due to budget restrictions, can only afford to geo-reference a portion of the maps scanned per fiscal year. Currently, they have geo-referenced 1,985 maps. As they near completion of the scanning phase, more resources will be directed toward geo-referencing. The Emergency Section Supervisor, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, has been working on ground-truthing and validating these maps as his job permits. The state's ultimate goal is to serve the geo-referenced mine maps online. Given existing funding levels, this goal is projected to take at least a few more years. Until that time, the MOA's (vectorized tracings of the mine boundaries) are available by county and in some areas, on a 7.5 minute topographic map basis. These maps, as well as mine directory information, are available via the link provided below. http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/maps-data-pub/coal-maps.shtml |
