Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - Indiana

The State of Indiana received a grant of $52,000. The contract resulted in the initiation of a project which is ongoing to collect historic coal mine maps from Indiana's state Archives and other sources. As a result of the MSHA funding in 2005, over 300 underground mine maps were repaired, scanned, digitally archived, geo-referenced, and made available to the public through the Indiana Geological Survey's Interactive Map Site which can be accessed from the Indiana Geological Survey website at: The digital images were submitted to OSMRE's Mine Map Repository in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since 2005 there have been an additional 600 digital mine maps submitted to OSMRE.

This work has been incorporated into the Coal Mine Information System (CMIS), an integrated geographic information system (GIS) and relational database management system designed to facilitate the compilation, preservation, management, analysis, and dissemination of maps and data associated with Indiana's coal mines. This project has promoted accessibility to data and provided the Indiana AML program with a comprehensive and powerful tool for their role as the regulatory agency engaged in the evaluation of abandoned mine sites and subsidence risk assessment. The CMIS provides mine data to citizens, industry, and government agencies through publications, the Interactive Map Server (IMS) web site, and individualized responses to requests for information. The grant was used to assist and promote the ongoing work on the CMIS.

The Indiana Geological Survey initiated the process of locating, compiling, and scanning the historic coal mine maps housed within their own archives, the Indiana State Archives, and the Indiana Bureau of Mines and Mining, as well as those maps that may be held by Indiana citizens. The funding was to assist in this scanning and digitizing effort, with the ultimate goal of geo-referencing these digital images and adding them to the CMIS data. Although the infrastructure of the CMIS was already in place, the addition of geo-referenced mine map images significantly enhances the value and utility of the system and preserved the invaluable, but fragile, resource by creating a digital archive of these deteriorating paper maps. Specific tasks included collecting and scanning original paper underground coal mine maps. This project addressed the need to capture time-sensitive data from a historic resource. The coal mine maps had not previously been preserved or stored in conditions favorable for keeping them structurally stable and legible, and were subject to continued deterioration.
