Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - Maryland

The Maryland Bureau of Mines catalogued, geo-referenced, and digitized approximately 682 deep mine maps in the Western Maryland Coal Field. The maps were geo-referenced using ArcMap according to corresponding features between the map and USGS topographic maps. An in-field inventory of deep mine related features also was conducted. These features were recorded using a handheld GPS and include seeps, mine openings, subsidence, and gob piles. These features were placed into a shapefile to be used in a GIS.

Currently, there are numerous shapefiles that identify areas of past deep mining and the features that go with them. There is an online interactive website that shows deep mining in the Western Maryland Coal Region; however, features such as mine openings and subsidence have not been added to the site for fear of creating a public safety issue.
