Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - New York

The New York State Geological Survey (NYSGS), in conjunction with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), submitted a three-part proposal to find and publicize the location of all abandoned underground mines in New York. They received a grant of $25,000. No state agency is currently charged with tracking these mines and there are no regulatory requirements that mining companies provide local or state governmental entities with closure maps upon cessation of operations. The proposal had three structural phases: 1) identify all abandoned underground mines and locate and scan all maps of those mines, 2) geo-rectify the maps and transfer them to modern base maps, and 3) publish the information on the NYSDEC web site. MSHA funded the first phase of the project.

NYSGS performed a search of various existing sources and agency files, locating 257 abandoned underground mines in New York. These ranged in scale from shallow, pre-Revolutionary War lead mines to industrial mineral mines whose dimensions were measured in square miles. More than 1,300 maps associated with these mines were located and scanned, completing the first phase of the project. The remaining work is being performed at a slower pace using NYSDEC funds. Final completion has not been achieved.
