Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - Pennsylvania

The State of Pennsylvania received a $1 million grant. The Department of Environmental Protection held two public outreach workshops in order to obtain access to as many of the privately held mine maps as possible. The DEP partnered with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) in 2003, inviting all parties who had, or knew of, maps depicting the location of abandoned mines to help create the abandoned mine map database. The workshops enabled those who attended to bring a list of all such maps in their possession so DEP staff could input the locations of those maps into the database. As a result of these workshops and ongoing efforts, over 12,000 maps were obtained by the DEP.

The DEP purchased state-of-the-art 54-inch-wide roll-feed digital scanning equipment, and hardware and software to equip five individual bureaus with adequate and updated equipment in order to scan and make digital copies of all of the maps in the DEP's possession. In addition, each bureau created a digital catalog of the maps in their possession. The data from these five databases was then combined to develop a single database known as PHUMMIS - Pennsylvania Historical Underground Mine Map Inventory System, combining all of the map information into one database. This database is still under development with plans to make it available to the public in the future.

The DEP also purchased storage servers at the Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access (PASDA) system from which the mine maps will eventually be served out to the public. Upon completion, the PHUMMIS database will provide the access point and map data that will link the database to the digital map image.

The DEP has scanned and preserved over 29,000 mine maps since the Quecreek inundation and over 46,000 maps since initiating this project.

The DEP has partnered with state universities in order to help them provide similar data and to preserve digital images of the maps that they have in their possession. A large format digital camera, as well as hardware and software, was purchased for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. This camera allows digital images to be made of maps that are physically too large or too fragile to be placed into the roll-feed scanners. Additionally, the DEP has helped the University of Pittsburgh to initiate a scanning program for the large number of maps in their collection. Additionally, the DEP has scanned and digitally preserved a number of these maps that were critical to current environmental and safety projects. In many cases, these were the only maps that could be located for a particular area or project.

The DEP has initiated a project to digitally preserve the annual report data for mines and to make this available to the public. This information can be found at the following web address: Individual map catalog databases can be found at the following address:
