Summary Of State Grants For Mine Mapping - West Virginia
West Virginia received a grant of $1.2 million. This money was instrumental in permitting the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training (WVOMHS&T) to develop the West Virginia Abandoned Mine Mapping Project (AMMP). It provided the initial resources to purchase equipment and supplies and to staff the project. In the course of the past 4 years the AMMP has matured and is now recognized as a valuable tool for the general public, academic fields, business entities, and regulatory agencies by providing information that allows them to make educated decisions on safety, economic, and environmental concerns. Many have corresponded to the AMMP, offering their gratitude for the information provided. On three occasions in 2006 and 2007, the AMMP has been useful in the successful rescue of individuals lost in abandoned mines (7-31-06, 4-26-07 and 8-10-07). The WVOMHS&T has incorporated AMMP personnel as members of the West Virginia Mine Rescue Team. Over this course of time, it is estimated that more than 235,000 maps have been reviewed, resulting in the addition of 6,500 scanned maps to the database. Since many maps detail more than one mine, these 6,500 maps have provided approximately 14,000 database entries of interest. Along with publishing this information on the WVOMHS&T web site, the information is provided to the WVGES and OSM for publication on their web sites. This distribution allows for broad access to the information for all interested parties. By partnering with the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey (WVGES) this information can be accessed via the following web sites: While reviewing privately owned mine map inventories it has been discovered that archives occasionally contain information concerning neighboring states. This information is being digitized and will be forwarded to the appropriate agencies of the associated states (primarily Kentucky and Virginia). |
