An Onalaska-area bicyclist suffered serious injuries Wednesday morning when he crashed after getting separated from a group of riders.

The 59 year-old victim was flown to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center about an hour after he was found in a rock quarry, according to the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department.

Other riders found the victim just after 7:30 a.m. Because of the lay of the land, he could not be seen by passing motorists, according to sheriff's reports.

Onalaska first responders, Onalaska firefighters, paramedics with Tri-State Ambulance and sheriff's deputies spent at least 15 minutes moving him out of the rocks and to the road, where a MedLink helicopter was waiting to transport him, according to a Tri-State official.

The victim's family requested that his condition not be released, a Gundersen spokesman said.

According to the sheriff's department, he was riding with friends when he went on a side road with the understanding he would eventually meet up with the other riders at the Onalaska YMCA.

The other riders arrived at the rendezvous point, but when he didnt arrive they set out to find him.
