"Near Miss" Accident Information File

A 13-year-old boy was severely injured after falling nearly 60 feet from a quarry bluff near Clarksville, Tenn. The youngster was playing with eight other friends when he lost his footing. "We didn't know how high it was," said one friend. "He had ahold of a branch. It wasn't strong enough. I go to grab him, and I almost fell also. By the time I went to get him, he had already fallen." Rescue officials had difficulty extricating the boy from the rocky area at the base of the quarry wall, about 300 yards from the swimming hole the teens had been playing in earlier. A LifeFlight helicopter landed in the quarry and flew the victim, who was in critical condition, to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The youngsters apparently had been to the quarry several times, in spite of barricades set up to deter trespassers. (Source: The Leaf Chronicle/Clarksville)
