Incidents that could have resulted in a fatality, but did not.
A police chase in central Connecticut ended in a real cliffhanger. A 20-year-old man had to rescued from the side of a steep wall of a quarry in Newington after authorities say he led police from five towns in a car chase. He was found hanging on for dear life with his bare hands for about an hour. The chase began with a speeding car on the Berlin Turnpike. Police pursued the car, and eventually found it abandoned near the quarry; the man then fled on foot. A short time later, searchers found him hanging off a cliff. Below him was a treacherous 300-foot drop into the quarry. Police say he was minutes away from losing his grip. The man was taken to Hartford Hospital and treated for hypothermia.
