03/25/2005
A man who fell into an abandoned mine shaft near Ridgecrest, Calif., was successfully pulled to the surface by a rescue team, after his friend signaled for help. Authorities say the injured man either sprained or broke his arm and was unable to climb back up the shaft under his own power. His friend stood watch until help arrived. The accident happened in one of several abandoned mines near the Kern County-San Bernardino County line. (Source: Associated Press)
