Louisville Courier-Journal July 22, 2009 Corps cracking down on quarry use after boy’s fall from bluff Jumping, swimming, fishing all prohibited An old rock quarry north of Old Post Road is off limits to swimmers and fishermen alike, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reminding the public in the wake of a 17-year-old boy’s fall from the bluff. The boy plummeted about 100 feet fromC the bluff’s edge onto rough terrain below in mid-May. He was later rescued by Russellville Fire Department personnel, who were forced to rappel into the quarry to reach him, and by rescue workers with the Pope County Office of EThe quarry, which was excavated in connection with the construction of Dardanelle Lock and Dam, is fenced and posted, and those who enter will be fined, according to a press release issued by the Corps, which owns the property. Today, the quarry supplies water for the pond in the Old Post Road Park day use area and serves as a source of irrigation water for the soccer fields. |
