An eastern Iowa man died while swimming in an old gravel pit south of Ocheyedan, Iowa. The 31-year-old man had been swimming in a county-owned sandpit lake where public swimming and fishing occur. The victim was swimming across the 141-yard lake with his brother-in-law when he became tired in water more than 10 feet deep. The relative rescued him, and others helped bring him to shore, administering CPR until an ambulance arrived. The man was later pronounced dead at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
